Estrogen Effect on Muscle
Welcome to an insightful video exploring the multifaceted role of estrogen in musculoskeletal function. Delving into recent developments and controversies, we investigate both direct and indirect effects of estrogen on tissues such as bone, muscle, and connective tissues. Notably, research from McMaster University highlights estrogen's impact on muscle, tendons, and ligaments, emphasizing the potential for hormonal manipulation to optimize performance and active lifestyles across ages. The review covers Estrogen's Role in Muscle Metabolism, Estrogen Replacement Therapy, and its role in muscle repair. Despite progress, challenges persist, including hormonal variability in women and uncertainties surrounding hormonal contraceptives. The video concludes by addressing unknowns, such as the impact of monthly variations and the role of other hormones, urging further exploration, especially in understanding estrogen's impact on men. The presentation underscores the need for tailored strategies in training and nutrition, considering individual responses and hormonal fluctuations, to optimize athletic performance and well-being in the active population.
This video was made my McMaster University students Asha Mundi, Esha Bhutkar, Iman Malik, and Palvir Nagra in collaboration with the Demystifying Medicine McMaster Program.
We would also like to thank Dr.Takuma Isshiki, Brooke D’Mello, and Safaa Naiel for providing feedback and reviewing the contents of this video.

I developed an addiction to dark chocolate around the time I had to quit caffeinated coffee. Chocolate actually gives me a little buzz, a feeling of well being. I particularly crave chocolate with nuts. So there is something about the sensory experience, the crunch of nuts with the slightly sweet dark chocolate. I would say it’s very similar to my caffeine addiction, except it doesn’t leave me feeling as anxious.

I can't express how grateful I am for ur video. My father was diagnosed with a rare autoimmune disorder, and the information out there was overwhelming and confusing...we've been reluctant as to whether he should get the vaccine despite his infections..Your explanation helped my family understand how the vaccine works and addressed many of our concerns and gave us the confidence to make a decision about whether he should take it. Thank you for making such a confusing topic easy to understand

In my sleep paralysis, many intruders were trying to break into my room. I was scared , horrified but i couldn't move an inch. I tried to scream but voice wouldn't come out of my through. It was like my hands were stuck to the ground with something. Myscle tension , more and more mucle tension and numbness at the same time . And when I wake up i thought i screamed but no, no one heard anything in my room. I usually sleep with my sister and mom. But no one heard me screaming. It was all in my head. Even the physical feelings , all in my mind. Believe it or not its terrifying. I woke up at 2 am . Didn't sleep until it was 4: 30 or 5 . But the feeling scared me badly.

Hi there, I’m 54 from Scotland and on 21st December 2023 I took Covid! I live on my own in a flat and my sister lives just around the corner! I had know idea I had Covid I thought I just had a really bad upset tummy as I was rushing to toilet constantly! Then I was struggling to breathe and I was having to use my inhaler ( I have asthma) and it wasn’t helping at all! I don’t know what happened next but what I can tell you is that I was unconscious at home for almost 2 days before my sister found me ( an hour later I would have been dead) I was blue lighted to queen Elizabeth hospital here in Glasgow, Scotland and found to have pneumonia and sepsis and multi organ failure (both kidneys) I also had bed sores, one on my heel and one on my thigh! I was intubated on the 21st of dec and put into a coma and they woke me up on the 3rd of January 2024! I was terrified with those tubes down my throat in ICU and I was gagging and vomiting continually into my hair, with the result they extubated me quicker than they had intended! I’ve never been so grateful in my life to have those tubes removed from my throat! The nurses (who were amazing) were asking did I know where I was etc and they were trying to tell me I was really seriously ill! Anyway after extubation I had to learn to drink again using teaspoons of water! I lost my voice for around a week which is normal but when it came back I had no appetite, I was still being fed through a tube in my nose! I didn’t realise how weak I was until I tried to lift my iPhone for the first time and couldn’t get it off the table I was exhausted! After 3 weeks in ICU I was moved to a ward where I was informed I also had broken my ankle when I collapsed at home I imagine! I got home after 7 weeks in hospital and I thought I was mostly better but I couldn’t walk without a zimmer frame etc it was awful! They told me it could take anything up to a year to get back to where I was physically! It’s June now and I still have nurses coming to my home for wound care and I also have a rehabs team who are trying to build my muscles back up to help me with walking and getting downstairs as I lost all of my muscle mass! It’s been one helluva exhausting journey, one I’m still on! Thanks for taking t xx he time to read, if you did that is lol also I hope you’re feeling loads better now? Love and hugs from Scotland 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿 💙🥰

I had sleep paralysis years ago, and I'm going tell you what happened. So one night I went to sleep, I then after a while I "woke up" I woke my eyes and couldn't move or anything, my legs or arms, like being strapped down. I moved and moved but nothing, I even tried moving my arms to punch my wall. Then a shadow man came, and slowly walked closer and closer. I couldn't do anything. The day soon night. And it was Fricking horrible. It's so bad, that even years I still have ptsd from it, and still think I see him. And likes he's the corner of my eye. Even now while writing I think see him.

Why for years when I explained this to doctors they just looked at me like I was crazy… I didn’t know the name for it I called it “getting stuck in my sleep” but then almost to the T explained the symptoms of sleep paralysis but no doctor ever told me what it was they just said huh that is strange and moved on… only about 10 years ago maybe I finally got a doctor that told me what I was expecting… I had done enough research on my own to be pretty sure what was happening but still. I remember years of explained this to doctors, therapist’s, etc and everyone looking at me like they had never heard anyone else say it before.

I just had a horrible one about 2 hours into being asleep.. I think anyway I had a light one earlier but then another came I think and it was one of the worst I’ve had… I can make noise when I’m in that state. It’s been happening since I was 7 maybe? In the last 6 years of this (I’m 35) I can make a loud (I think it’s loud I feel like I’m screaming but normally you can only hear it if you’re in the room) noise. I could feel my 7 year old standing over me laughing and I’m just begging in my mind for her to shake me awake… but she turned and started to walk away, so I assumed she wasn’t really there and it was a hallucination. I don’t see crazy things when this happens, only a couple times, usually it’s just I see people in my family or feel their presence and they watch me with out waking me up. Then I’ll wake up to no one around.. but she turned back around and said ready to wake up now.. and poof I just woke up with no one around. So she wasn’t really there, I can usually process it’s not really someone there pretty quick because my family all knows to give me shake when they hear me doing that. I’m rambling because I just woke up so I’ll wrap it up. This was awful and my face was buried in a pillow and it felt like I was going to die. I woke up with my heart pounding. Sucks It’s been maybe 2 months since my last bad one, which is good for me. My doctor gave me sleep meds I thought were helping.. tonight couldn’t remember if I took them so I only took a half in case I did take it, so I didn’t take too much but I don’t think I took any now. Edit: I get both kinds of sleep paralysis.. usually only when I take naps does it happen as I fall asleep.. it usually happens when I’m waking up… but also sometimes it happens to me a few hours into sleep, maybe before I’m entering into rem or something? Idk…. Also can anyone else verbally make a noise or say a word? I can make this moaning noise as it’s been explained to me (I feel like I’m saying words though)
